DVD's Again - Holy Cow, this works - almost

Finally converted a episode of House to the DVD-Video format and burned
a workable (almost) DVD.

The DVD (DVD+R) works fine in my PC and almost works in my almost brand
new Home DVD player. The problem I have is the video is washed out and
I get snap, crackle and pop for audio. In my PC it works perfect.

I suspect I need to fine tune the settings. Here is a link to the
commands I used...

http://www.linux.com/articles/53702

I know you guys will help out (Yeah right).

Here's the system specs...

Slack 12.1

Mplayer - Slackbuild
ffmpeg-20071007-i486-1kjz (Slackbuild waiting to be installed)
transcode-1.1.0-beta0-i386-1 (Slackbuild fails to compile)

I feel good about most of the codecs but may rebuild 2-3.

Any ideas on how to make some improvements? I'm so close I can taste it.

PS: I'm gonna try a reburn of the project to a DVD-R. I have had
problems with the format type in the past.

Hi Ron,
1/ Your ffmpeg is a bit old. Suggest you get the latest direct from
ffmpeg.

2/ I have built (today) transcode on Slackware 12.0 using build scripts
(for Slackware 12.1 but they work OK on 12.0) from here:
http://repository.slacky.eu/slackwar...code/1.0.6rc2/
src/

There are a lot of prerequisites for this.
Just try the slackbuild script. Anything missing is clearly listed,
with the URL of where to download it from.

3/ For mplayer I have in the past used slackbuild from
repository.slacky.eu
e.g. http://repository.slacky.eu/slackware-12.0/multimedia/
mplayer/1.0rc2try1/src/

Am presently using mplayer from svn from about 5 May 08.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi again Ron,

As you are apparently experimenting with video encoding techniques,
take a look at HandBrake. http://handbrake.fr/
I have been impressed by the results I've had with it.
It runs on Linux (CLI only), Windows (with GUI) and some Macs.

Cheers,

Peter

Oh good grief. I do appreciate the heads up on this one, albeit I'm
having a bit of trouble following an out of date "HOWTO" I found with
Google.

When I ask for help with a GUI tool people suggest CLI. When I ask for
help with CLI I get GUI suggestions, not that they aren't appreciated
but I'm beginning to see this stuff when I close my eyes :(

Again it seems to be working now. I've yet to get to burning the
transcoded project but am a few minutes away. I expect this one to fail
but while I was waiting I found some more docs to help sort these menu
options out.

Congratulations!

You might have been able to do this using "winders" in an hour or so,
but obviously you would not have been in 'control' or been able to
harness the 'power' of the CLI.

One in the eye for the windroids, eh?

With kind regards

Chu
