I have an HP Vectra VL420 DT I wiped the HD on. I don't know the M/B
type offhand. I found a board model number but didn't recognize a
brand name. The AGP video card says Rage 128 on it.

I don't want to start replacing components to get Linux to run - I
gave up trying that on a another PC years ago...maybe things are
easier now.

Any suggestions for a version of Linux to download (I REALLY gave up
previously- I had a few different versions, some of which I 'paid' for
CD's, manuals & books, and gave them all away, so I'm starting from
scratch.

The M/B and memory don't generate any errors during bootup, but this
machine was abandoned because XP didn't want to reinstall - .

I just want to recycle it in some half-creative way if possible.

The only important thing to know is wether it is 32 bit or 64 bit. The
32 bit will work on the 64 bit, but not the other way around:

32? (Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz). I doubt 64 existed in 2005 (not that I would
know).

Vl420's were in the 1.8 to 2.0ghz range and the stock HD was between 40
and 80 gb. I have 2 of them setting as spares in the back bedroom. This
message is being typed up on a Vectra vl400 933. I has 512mb of ram and
handles almost any Linus Distro just fin, will even run vmware server
and a guest system as well. I personally use OpenSuse Distros this one
is OpenSuse 10.3 and runs as good or better as my XP machine on a 2.0
ghz Intel P-IV does. I have run many varied and different distro's on
the vl400's and a few on the vl420's without issues on any of them.

Google unfortunately decided not to use the standards of quoting on
Usenet. There are several solutions to this problem. The best is to use a

If you are unable to keep a connection up, you can register at
http://www.rootshell.be and then connect to there and use slrn on that
machine. slrn is textbased and might be scary at first. As Usenet is
text anyway, you will very fast learn how to use it and configure it.

Only if all else fails and you have no option in using Usnet in any other
way, including waiting till you get home, you can use Google. You can
still quote correctly as described on the following page:

Understand that many people already filter out google postings. So best
look for an alternative. Usenet is not WWW. If you want WWW, look up
a webforum. This is not a webforum.
