upgraded my video card, now display all screwed
Typical question, I updated my video card, and even though it's an
Nvidia like the previous one, it doesn't seem to be compatible, driver-wise. Now X Windows is screwed up, and I chose the wrong option when it asked me to update the xorg.conf. How do I reset the xorg.conf from the command-line? Yousuf Khan |

Now with HH (8.04) it starts not with a option to select a graphic-card. I tried it with -phigh -plow as well all with the same result. Maybe there is instead a x-tool, I'm running still the "nv" driver for the GEForce 5500 I'm using. > > Curt Dragomir Kollaric -- This signature is licensed under the GPL and may be freely distributed as long as a copy of the GPL is included... :-) |

I've just tried it and -phigh did as expected and fully reset the xorg.conf to "standard". -- Moog "The G is for the gnarled face of someone who's on ninety thousand pounds a week who reckoned he should have had a throw in" |

I tried it again no such luck, it will start at the section if one wants to use the "frame-buffer device", and from there its the usual thing. It gives no options to select *any* video-card. Hm, I'm running Studio 8.04, upgraded from 7.10, don't know if this is the reason. >> >> Maybe there is instead a x-tool, I'm running still the "nv" >> driver for the GEForce 5500 I'm using. > > Really? Yes until now it was so. "nvidia-settings" didn't come up when I used the "nv" driver. Of course it can't. In any case in the mean time I installed NVIDIA driver. using sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.07-pkg1.run against it's recommendation I run it in init 1 (instead of init 3) and for the first time in about a month it installed the driver. Now at the login I see shortly the "NVIDIA" logo. As I guessed (but didn't mention here) I had a misconfigured xorg.conf file, which didn't give me the option to drop to a root shell (Ctrl+Alt+F*). > > That's a new one on me. > Dragomir Kollaric -- This signature is licensed under the GPL and may be freely distributed as long as a copy of the GPL is included... :-) |

Have you tried booting into the GUI and enabling the restricted drivers through System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers If that's possible? >>> Maybe there is instead a x-tool, I'm running still the "nv" >>> driver for the GEForce 5500 I'm using. >> >> Really? > > Yes until now it was so. Aaah. OK. I do suggest using the restricted drivers if at all possible. They are tested with the kernel and work with the current module headers. -- Moog "The G is for the gnarled face of someone who's on ninety thousand pounds a week who reckoned he should have had a throw in" |

Does the "-phigh" parameter work on that? Yousuf Khan |

I never had much joy before, I would get a hang whenever I tried anything even moderately graphics intensive. That was using 7.04 and 7.10 on my Athlon XP1700 main box. After the mobo died I used a p4 mobo in a new case and just dropped in the drives - of course it all fired up perfectly :) Figured it would be worth trying the restricted drivers again in case the flakey old mobo caused the problems, but I get the same problem. Within seconds of even just playing a video file I have to do a hard reset of the PC. Can't restart X, can't switch to a terminal login - absolutely dead-stick. The rough and ready test shows total hang (numlock light non-responsive), but the sound from the video will be going like a stuck CD, so something must still be alive. Restart and switch to nv driver and all is good again. Of course I can't use Compiz (no great loss on this PC) and Google Earth is a little slower than it should be, but it's not a real problem. Everything else is hunky dory, it is odd though. Still using 7.10 BTW. David -- Knowledge is of two kinds: we know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it.
