UPDATE on switching from Windows to Ubuntu Linux
As I mentioned before, our Co is switching its server side apps, which
suffered from low network perfromance of Windows, to Linux. So far the results are encouraging, as Linux is able to use the network cards, memory and CPU much more intensively, so we seem to be able to put a lot more apps on a Linux server, than we could with Windows. Plus it is more reliable. (cannot go into details) We are also scripting a lot of stuff, like automating setting up database replication, and other things and they will work much better under Linux. That keeps me plenty busy. Now, here's the real news: most likely we will also migrate user workstations, that also run extremely demanding apps, to Linux as well. Windows seems to be unable to effectively use CPUs for many threads, that's in addition to its networking weaknesses. So we'll bite the bullet and try switching a few most power hungry desktops to Linux. We already use a platform independent GUI library, so switching should not be a problem code-wise. Web browser and Solitaire will continue to be available to the users. i |

I will very strongly try to drive marginal "cost of ownership" or, more exactloy, cost of system administration, down to zero per machine. I want all of them to be managed by scripts. -- Due to extreme spam originating from Google Groups, and their inattention to spammers, I and many others block all articles originating from Google Groups. You can fit a lot more casual games in a Linux box <grin>. -- Q: What's the difference between a Mac and an Etch-a-Sketch? A: You don't have to shake the Mac to clear the screen. |
