Problems with OGL-Games

I've got a big Problem with OpenGL-Games:
If I play 3D-Games, there are graphical errors, and if i want to change
the resolution or fullscreen/window, the game crashes. At some games its
even so heavy that I almost can't see the Game, but the Desktop instead.
Please help me. I've already done these things:
-> turning off compiz
-> reinstall the game
-> reinstall the drivers

Reinstalling the System should be the last thing I do.
My System:
OS: Ubuntu 8.04
CPU: 3200 Pentium 4
RAM: 1G DDR
Graphics Card: 256M Ram, ATIX600
Sound Card: onboard
HDD: 320G

Thanks in advance
