Does anyone know when the final release of SQL Server '08 will be?
I'd heard sometime in August but I'm having difficulty finding
specifics about the date.

The Microsoft web site says "now shipping". MSDN subscribers can
already download the final version, and anyone can download the free
trial version. I suspect it will be a bit longer for the boxed retail
product to be available. Sorry I don't have a date for that, but I
would hope for some time in September.
