help needed - network disk

Hi- I've googled - no luck...

We have 2 pcs at the church... one running XP the old one running 98se. I
put the one running 98 onto the network but cut the install short since I
did not have the 98 disk handy while setting up the network files. At
startup, it's looking for vserver.vxd... long story short, I now have the 98
disk and with that file, so I can now add it...

that's the background.. here's the goal:

to make a network disk from the XP machine - that has no floppy drive.. only
a CD drive...

is there a way to make a network disk from that machine, with only a CD
burner???

Which I would then use on the 98 machine??

OR, can I make one from my XP machine at home??

sorry it's wordy, that's the whole project....thank you!

Re: help needed - network disk

I would avoid the network disk as too much trouble, and simply put the 98
machine in the same workgroup as the XP machine. The 98 help will show you
where to change the workgroup name to the same one you use in XP (in XP,
start/run, type 'sysdm.cpl')
There is no 'sharing' in 98 to worry about.

Re: help needed - network disk

Thanks Mark- I think first I have to fix the 98... because it as not a
complete network set up, when I click on the network, it come up with the
error.. you are not authorized... access, something to that effect... I
should have never clicked skip file during setup.. now I have the 98 disk
handy but not at the time...
that's why I was hoping the network disk would fix things...

Re: help needed - network disk

Try restoring the registry in 98 to a date prior to date the problem started.
Registry backup files are located in C:\Windows\SYSBCKUP with sequential names of
RB###.cab, one will be named RBBAD.cab which you do not want to use to restore. Each
new day that the PC is booted a new backup file is created with the new file
replacing the oldest.

To restore the registry:
Click Start > Shutdown > Restart In MS-DOS Mode.
At the prompt type: scanreg /restore and press Enter. * Note the space between
scanreg and the / (forward slash)
Select a date prior to the problem.
Follow the prompts until completed and reboot.

If the issue persists see:

The set up home or small office network wizard is on the XP disk. Put the
disk in and click on perform additional tasks. You'll see it there.
Not sure if that will show on a 98 machine but can't hurt to put it in and
look.
