C-Media AC 97 "This device cannot start code 10"

Hi all,
symptom - no sound
uninstall - reinstall device gives me the error mentioned.
Windows update is up to date.
the PC manufacturer has gone into liquidation
(mercury elite...Target special) so no support from them.
the pc user said he first noticed no sound after he had installed a new
printer (probably not relevant)
what can I try now please?

It is either of matter of incorrect drivers
or a device conflict.

thankyou philo,
is it possible for me to fix this?
I recall trying to update the driver but getting the message that the
driver is the most up to date available
how do I determine if it is a "device conflict"
