Hi folks,

I have a computer and the adapter from the regular power outlet in the
wall into the computer broke. You know what I mean: that thing that
you use to charge the battery and that thing (modem?) that provides
regular power to your computer

It doesn't say exactly what it is but on the back side it says REPLACE
WITH HP SPARE 402018-001.

I called HP and they told me that it costs me approx. USD 170, which
is an outrageous price for that little thing, if you ask me.

I was at Wallmart lately and saw that they have different kind of
adapters but I have no clue if other adapters fit in a HP notebook.

And here is my question:

Did any of you ever had to replace this particular HP spare part and
did you replace it with something else than from HP and how did it
work?

One. We have to assume you have a laptop computer. It would be far better if you had told us the
HP model you use.
Two. We have to assume you broke the Power Adapter (which has nothing to do with a modem)
Three. I have never seen one of these in Wal-Mart. They are a specialty item sold by computer
repair shops.
Four. If you want to buy an non-HP part, you would need to know what the output voltage of your old
part and if the center tap is + or -. It makes a big difference.
From what little you know about computer parts, I would recommend that you buy the HP part. You
can do a Google search and find this part for much less than $170.

My Model is HP Pavilion Notebook, Daave. I knew these adapters
shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

There's a more precise model number, that you need to know to determine the
correct adapter. The real model number will be printed on a label on the
bottom of the laptop.

The HP part number you've taken from the adapter is helpful in identifying
appropriate replacements.
