Re: hp laptop starts up then shuts down before eror screen can be read
Press F8 during the 'black screen' just after the BIOS screen. The Recovery
menu might offer you a 'repair' option. If you see a "Command prompt" option, run the command: CHKDSK /R -- Was this helpful? Then click the Ratings button. Voting helps the web interface. http://www.microsoft.com/wn3/locales...eAPostAsAnswer Mark L. Ferguson .. Re: hp laptop starts up then shuts down before eror screen can be read
You will need to press the F8 key before windows starts to load then disable
the auto restart on error. That will allow you to read the error message and someone may be able to guide you. You could also try booting from the XP CD and run the recovery console (if that's an option) once in the recovery console type chkdsk /r to correct any errors & try booting again. Please post copies of the Stop Error Reports. Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before Automatically Restart. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message. An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on system failure. If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only. -- Hope this helps.
