Choices between Question and comment
I need to ask a question but when I click question, I get a clicking sound
but a drop down box doesn't open. When I click comment, I get a window I can make a comment. If anyone reads this, I'd appreciate a fix on this. And here's my question, which I couldn't ask because it doesn't give me a place to ask it. During all the time I've been using a computer, I've never had this happen. Normally when I type something on notepad and save it, I can pull it up, add something to it, save it again. And again and again and again. A couple of weeks ago, something changed. Now when I pull up a saved txt file on notepad, I have to right click it, view source, do whatever editing I need to do and close it and then save it as a new file. Have you ever had that happen and what can I do to make it the way it's always been? I read every single one of the contents of the notepad help file and it's just not there. Mari Marisok@aol.com |

Re: Choices between Question and comment
The first part of your post makes no sense to me since you appear to be using
the web-based interface and I'm using a newsreader (OE). In the latter part of your post you define how you're opening a text file. The procedure you're using to edit a text file is quite abnormal. You said, "...when I pull up a saved txt file on notepad, I have to right click it, view source, do whatever editing...". Maybe you're not dealing with text files. Make sure that your Folder Options are set to allow to view file extensions. In Windows Explorer it should be shown with the TXT extension similar to this: anyfilename.txt. Normally, all one has to do is to double-click on the text file and it will launch Notepad and open the file for editing. If okay, try double clicking on the text file. If it doesn't open normally, post back with a description of its behavior. Re: Choices between Question and comment
Instead of using the web site interface to access the newsgroups, set up
Outlook Express to do it. Open OE, click on Tools, Accounts, Add News account. This brings up a wizard. When it asks for an email address, make one up (i.e., nobody@nowhere.net) or you will drown in spam if your real one is used. For the server name, use: msnews.microsoft.com Once the account is set up, click the close button and it will ask if you want to download newsgroups--say yes. Once downloaded, subscribe to those groups that you want to follow. There are foreign language newsgroups so stick with the ones that start with: microsoft.public and are NOT followed by a two digit entry (i.e., jp, kr , etc). For example, you do not want to subscribe to: microsoft.public.jp.windowsxp unless you speak Japanese. Regarding your Notepad problem: Are you sure it is Notepad that is opening? There is no entry called View Source on the right click context menu of an unaltered Notepad program. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP Shell User "Mari" <Mari@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3C8AFC5E-437C-48DF-8408-111E6CD8CFB9@microsoft.com... >I need to ask a question but when I click question, I get a clicking sound > but a drop down box doesn't open. Re: Choices between Question and comment Still have ?????????
Dear David,
I agree that it's abnormal. More than abnormal, quite bizarre. Nevertheless, that's the way it is. Let me recapitulate. I keep an important notepad text file on my desktop. I have for years. Each day or so, I need to add information to this file. No problem until a few weeks ago. Normally, I would open the file, do the editing or adding, save it again and that would be that. Something changed, I don't know what but I would right click, select "View Source" and edit the source (as one would do when FTPing.) Now it won't let me see the source to edit. I right click, select "View Source" and nothing. So what I must do is copy and paste the entire txt file to a NEW notepad. Edit and add to it and then save the new one and delete the old one. Any insights? Thanks, Mari "David Webb" wrote: >> In the latter part of your post you define how you're opening a text file. The > procedure you're using to edit a text file is quite abnormal. > > You said, "...when I pull up a saved txt file on notepad, I have to right click > it, view source, do whatever editing...". > > Maybe you're not dealing with text files. Re: Choices between Question and comment
Hi, Ron,
Yes, I'm sure it's Notepad that I'm opening. I know there is no entry called View Source when you click an unaltered Notepad. But my Notepad file is altered with much important text over the months and you can right click and get View Source on that. The problem, however, is that now when I click on View Source, it doesn't let me view it. For the rest of the saga, scroll above and read my other reply to David Webb. Re: Choices between Question and comment Still have ?????????
Is that a shortcut on your Desktop or is the file actually in the Desktop
folder? If it's not in the Desktop folder, where is it located. You still haven't told me what happens when you double-click on the file. Have you verified that your Folder Options allow viewing file extensions? Something's not adding up here! If you are talking about "View Source," it sounds an awful lot like you're talking about .htm or .html files. To make sure, enable the viewing of file extensions: My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types." Click OK. So are these files .txt files or are they something else? |
