Upgrade XP Pro to Vista?

I currently have XP Pro on my desktop box and I've been using my wife's
new Vista home Premium notebook and I'm thinking, can I buy the Vista
Home Premium upgrade and instal it on another partition or disk on my
box, or is it only been valid if installed over XP Pro which I don't
want to do? Is it possible to somehow tell Vista that I have a copy of
XP, like when I first installed XP home I had to insert my Win 98SE disk
first?
