SYMPTOMS
When typing a Web address in the Address box without beginning the address with "http://", and then press ENTER, you may receive the following error message:
Internet Explorer could not open the search page.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if your Internet Explorer connection settings are not configured properly, or if you are not currently connected to the Internet.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, verify that your Internet Explorer connection settings are configured properly, or connect to the Internet:

1. If you are not connected to the Internet, skip to step 2. If you are connected to the Internet, verify your connection settings are configured properly. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Connections tab.
2. Connect to the Internet manually, or run the Internet Connection wizard to create a connection to the Internet.
For additional information about the Internet Connection Wizard, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
159686 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/159686/EN-US/) Manual Setup for Internet Explorer 3.x and 4.x for Windows 95/98
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
This can also occur if you are using America Online (AOL) as your Internet service provider (ISP) and you are not currently connected to AOL, or if Internet Explorer is not correctly configured to browse the Web through AOL. In Internet Explorer 5, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then change the setting for the Automatically Detect Settings check box to the opposite of the current setting. Click OK until all dialog boxes are closed, and then quit and restart Internet Explorer.
