Compdll.dll error
SYMPTOMS
========
When opening Microsoft Money you may receive the following error:
'Error Starting Program'
A required .dll file, , was not found.
Or, when backing up to a floppy disk drive you receive the error message:
Money is unable to load the file Compdll.dll. Either the file is missing or
your system is low on memory. First, try closing some other applications. If
this doesn't work, you may need to reinstall Money from your original product
disks.
However, closing all programs and reinstalling Money does not resolve this
problem.
CAUSE
=====
Money may be unable to find the required files due to an incomplete installation
of Money.
RESOLUTION
==========
To resolve this issue, delete your Setup.stf file and then reinstall Money. If
that does not resolve the issue, try adding the location of the dynamic- link
library (.dll) files to the working directory of the shortcut used to open
Money.
Method 1: Delete the Setup.stf File and Reinstall Money
-------------------------------------------------------
1. To delete the Setup.stf file, follow these steps:
a. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.
b. Navigate to the Microsoft Money folder; its default location is:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money
c. In the Microsoft Money folder, double-click the Setup folder.
d. In the Setup folder, locate the Setup.stf file.
e. Using your right mouse button, right-click the Setup.stf file, and then
click Delete on the shortcut menu.
f. Click Yes when you are prompted with the following message: Are you sure
you want to send 'Setup.stf' to the Recycle Bin?
g. On the File menu, click Close.
You are now ready to reinstall Money.
2. To reinstall Money, follow these steps:
a. Insert your Money CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
c. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
d. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.
e. In the list of programs, click to select Microsoft Money 98 or Microsoft
Money 99.
f. Click Add/Remove.
g. Follow the Setup program to completion.
Method 2: Modify Your Money Shortcut
------------------------------------
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be
different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product
documentation to complete these steps.
To modify your Money shortcut, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the Start button and click Open on the shortcut menu.
2. In the Start Menu folder, double-click the Programs icon.
3. Right-click the Microsoft Money shortcut icon.
4. Click Properties.
5. Click the Shortcut tab.
6. In the Start In Line box, add the following to the end of the existing path:
\system
The Start in Line should now look something like this; note the quotation
marks are needed
"C:\\\System"
where \ is the directory where
Money is installed.
7. Click OK and close all open windows.
NOTE: You do not need to restart the computer.
8. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click Money.
NOTE: If you have another shortcut you use to open Money, modify it as well,
following steps 3-8 for each shortcut.
