Outlook IPF in kernel32.dll or Emalscan.dll

SYMPTOMS
========

When you quit Outlook, you may receive one of the following error messages:

OUTLOOK caused an invalid page fault in module Emalscan.dll at 0137:10004d3a.

-or-

OUTLOOK caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at 0157:bff99dbd.

When you start Outlook, you may receive the following error message:

Fatal Exception 0E @ 0028:c165be8f vbx mcscan32

CAUSE
=====

You have installed McAfee's VirusScan, and there is a problem with the "Exchange
Scan" add-in in Outlook.

RESOLUTION
==========

Choose one of the following methods to correct the error.

Method 1
--------

Obtain and install the service pack, v98sp402.zip, available from Network
Associates, at the following address:

ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/win9x/svc_pack/

Method 2
--------

To disable the Microsoft Exchange Scan add-in, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

2. On the Other tab, click Advanced Options.

3. Click Add-In Manager.

4. Click to clear the Exchange Scan check box, and then click OK three times to
close all dialog boxes.

5. Quit Outlook, restart your computer, and then start Outlook. The error should
not recur.

NOTE: These steps, while preventing the error, will disable the VirusScan
functionality in Outlook. You should contact the McAfee VirsusScan manufacturer,
Network Associates, Inc., for further troubleshooting. The WhatsNew.txt file,
installed in

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\McAfee VirusScan

folder provides information about how to troubleshoot VirusScan problems and how
to contact Network Associates, Inc. for technical support.

Method 3
--------

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If
you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk
(ERD).
Remove the Exchange Scan add-in from the registry. To modify the registry, follow
these steps:

1. Close Outlook.

2. Click Start, click Run, and type "regedit" (without the quotation marks).
Click OK.

3. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Cli ent\Extensions

4. With the Exchange Scan data key selected in the right-hand pane of the
Registry Editor, press DELETE.

5. Close the Registry Editor.

\** If you find other solutions to this problem, please comment this article.
\**
\** The IPF may also occur in DAO350.dll. The same steps used in this article
\** corrected the error. -- V-1ROBR.
\**
\** It has been reported that if certain entries are missing from the AUTOEXEC.BAT
\** file you will get this error. Check to see if these lines are in the
\** AUTOEXEC.BAT. Add them if they are missing. At the top of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
\** add theses two lines:
\**
\**
\**
\**
\** C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1\SCAN.EXE C:\
\** @IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE
\**
\**
\**
\**
\** At the end of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file add these two lines:
\**
\**
\**
\**
\** REM Environment Setting For McAfee VirusScan
\** SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1
\**
\**
\**
\**
\** Save the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and restart the computer. -- a-jivey
\**
\** This problem may also occur following a corrupt install of McAfee's Virus Scan.
\** After a corrupt install of McAfee, when you open Outlook you may receive an
\** error message that McAfee did not install, or could not install a *.dll file.
\**
\** After such a message, Exchange Scan may not show in the Add-in Manager, but you
\** may receive the same error message noted above. If you uninstall McAfee, the
\** error message goes away. -- a-dgrant
\**
\** Noticed after user installed McAfee e-mail scan add-in, they no longer see
\** Capital "L" in the banner for folder names -- not in the folder list, but in the
\** heading where you see the folder name in gray banner on top left. After
\** disabling e-mail scan, the "L"s mysteriously reappeared! -- V-1NWHE.
\**
\** This may also happen when using OL97. -- KEAZ487.
