Outlook IPF RPCRT4.DLL

SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to start Microsoft Outlook 97, version 8.0, you may receive the
following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

Clicking on the Details button yields the following additional information:

OUTLOOK caused an invalid page fault in
module RPCRT4.DLL at 0137:7fcd8bb2.

CAUSE
=====

A reference to the file, schannel.dll in the Windows Registry causes this
problem.

RESOLUTION
==========

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry
Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values
online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a
backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the
registry.

You can resolve this problem with the following steps:

1. On the Windows Taskbar, click Start and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) and click OK.

3. In the Registry Editor, click to select the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\contro l\SecurityProviders

4. On the right-hand side of the screen (under Default - Value not set),
double-click "SecurityProviders."

5. In the "Value data" box, delete only the string "schannel.dll" from the list
of files.

IMPORTANT: Leave any other files listed, such as msnsspc.dll. Do NOT delete
the SCHANNEL subkey that is also under Security Providers; delete only the
"Value data" (text string) for schannel.dll in the Security Providers key.
The SCHANNEL subkey stores information that Microsoft Internet Explorer
(MSIE)uses for certificate

authentication.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The following programs install the Schannel.dll file.

Program Size Modified Date
------------------------- --------- ---------------
Windows 95 (4.00.950 B) 109,200 08/24/96
MSIE 3.00 (4.70.1155) 109,200 08/09/96
MSIE 3.01 (4.70.1215) 111,248 10/15/96
MSIE 3.02 (4.70.1300) 111,248 03/22/97
Frontpage 97 (2.0.2.1112) 111,248 11/12/96

Schannel.dll is an executable security file that works with the Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL). For example, signed certificates received in MSIE 3.0 are verified
with calls to VerifySignature, which is a function in Schannel.dll

\* MSONLY:
\* You can reproduce this error with Outlook, version 8.00. Testing with Outlook,
\* version 8.01, under Windows 95, does not reproduce this error. This implies that
\* Outlook, version 8.0l, may fix the problem; however, there is no known fix in
\* version 8.01 for this issue.
