To hide the tray icon in TightVNC, open regedit and browse to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default

Create a new DWORD key named DisableTrayIcon and set it to 1.

Google brought me to this site when I did a search for the registry key to disable the system tray icon for TightVNC. That thread is located here:

Your instructions to create the following key did not work:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default]
"DisableTrayIcon"=dword:00000001

Another search showed me the correct setting that did work:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3]
"DisableTrayIcon"=dword:00000001

I was unable to add this comment in that location, because it is marked Read-Only.
