Install Outlook Express
Outlook Express comes pre-installed on many new computers. You will first want to see if Outlook Express needs to be installed before continuing.
Is Outlook Express is already installed?
If there is an Outlook Express icon on your desktop, double-click it to verify that Outlook Express is installed and works.
If there is no Outlook Express icon on your desktop, you can search for the program file.
1. From the Start button, select Find then select Files or Folders.
2. Type msimn.exe
3. If the file is found, you can create a shortcut for it on your desktop by right-clicking the file, and selecting Create Shortcut.
4. Windows will prompt you, "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want to place the shortcut on the desktop instead?" Click Yes.
You can now skip to the section Configure Outlook Express.
Install Outlook Express
1. Insert the Outlook 98 CD into your CD drive.
2. From the desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
3. Double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive. There will either be a setup.exe file here, or a folder called "Outlk98".
4. If you see a folder called Outlk98 double-click it.
5. Double-click the Setup program.
6. On the initial screen, click Install Outlook 98. You will see the Outlook 98 Active Setup dialog box.
7. Click Next. You will see the License Agreement.
8. Read the License Agreement, then select, "I Accept the Agreement" and click Next. You will be prompted for your User Name and Organization.
9. Enter your name (e.g. John Smith) and organization (e.g. CGIAR).
10. Click Next.
11. For the Installation Option, select Full Installation.
12. Click Next.
13. If you see a dialog box for E-mail Upgrade Options, select Microsoft Exchange and click Next.
14. For the E-Mail Service Options, select Corporate or Workgroup.
15. Click Next. You will be asked where to install Outlook 98.
16. Click Next to accept the default installation folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office).
17. If you see the "Upgrade New Items?" dialog box, select Upgrade only newer items and then click OK.
18. After the initial installation phase is done, allow the machine to reboot.
Create a shortcut for Outlook Express
1. From the Start button, select Find then select Files or Folders.
2. Type msimn.exe
3. If the file is found, you can create a shortcut for it on your desktop by right-clicking the file, and selecting Create Shortcut.
4. Windows will prompt you, "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want to place the shortcut on the desktop instead?" Click Yes.
Configure Outlook Express
1. Use TAS2.2 to establish a connection to the Internet.
2. From the desktop, double-click the Outlook Express icon on your desktop. You will see the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box.
3. Type your name in the Display name field.
4. Click Next. You will see the E-mail address dialog box.
5. In the E-mail address field, type the email address noted on page 2 of this document.
6. Click Next. You will see the E-mail Server Names dialog box.
7. The POP3 option of the first field will be highlighted.
8. In the Incoming mail server field, type the Incoming mail server listed in your Email Information.
9. In the Outgoing mail server field, type the Outgoing mail server listed in your Email Information.
10. Click Next. You will see the Internet Mail Logon dialog box.
11. The Log on using radio button will be selected.
12. In the POP account name field, type the User Name listed in your Email Information.
13. In the Password field, type the password listed in your Email Information..
14. Click Next. You will see Friendly Name dialog box.
15. In the Internet mail account name field, type the user name listed in your Email Information..
16. Click Next. You will see the Internet Mail Connection dialog box.
17. Select the radio button for the third option: I will establish my Internet Connection manually.
18. Click Next. You will see the Congratulations dialog box.
19. Click Finish.
20. You will see the Outlook Express Inbox for the mailbox profile you just created.
21. From the Tools menu, select Accounts. You will see the Internet Accounts dialog box. The Internet mail account you just created will be listed.
22. Double click on the Internet mail account name you just created. You will see the Properties dialog box.
23. Select the Servers tab.
24. Click to place a checkmark in the box, My server requires authentication.
25. Click the Settings button.
26. Verify that Use same settings as my Incoming mail server is selected.
27. Click OK to return to the Properties dialog box
28. Select the Advanced tab.
29. In the Delivery section of the Advanced tab, click to place a checkmark in the box, Leave a copy of messages on server.
30. Click to place a checkmark in the box, Remove from server when deleted from ‘Deleted Items.’
31. Click OK. You will return to the Internet Accounts dialog box.
32. Click Close.
33. From the Tools menu, select Options.
34. Deselect (remove the check mark) for Check for new messages every X minutes.
35. Select Empty messages from the ‘Deleted Items’ folder on exit.
36. Click the Send tab.
37. In the Mail Sending format, select Plain text.
38. Verify that there is a checkmark in Save copy of sent messages in the ‘Sent Items’ folder.
39. Deselect Send messages immediately.
40. Click OK.
Configure Outlook Express to search the Email Directory
1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
2. Click the Add button.
3. Select Directory Service.
4. In the Internet Directory (LDAP) server field, type the name of the Internet Directory (LDAP) server listed on page 2.
5. Click Next.
6. In the Check E-mail addresses field select No.
7. Click Next. You will see the Friendly Name dialog box.
8. In the Internet Directory Service Name type Email Directory.
9. Click Next.
10. Click Finish.
Congratulations!
You are now ready to begin composing, sending and receiving email using Outlook Express!
