PPT2000: Slow Performance or Memory Errors Running PowerPoint

SYMPTOMS
When you run Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows with virtual memory turned off, or with very little free disk space, you may experience slow performance or receive memory-related error messages, similar to the following:

You do not have enough memory to perform this function.



RESOLUTION
Check for sufficient disk space, and make sure Virtual Memory is on. Please note that other conditions can cause this error.

To check for free disk space, follow these steps:

Double-click the My Computer icon.


Right-click on the C: drive, and click Properties.


The Free Space should be listed in the Properties window. As a general rule, you should have at least as much available hard drive space as you have physical RAM. If you have less memory than this, you will need to free up disk space or upgrade your hard drive.


To turn on Virtual Memory, follow these steps:
Quit any programs you have running.


On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


Double-click the System icon.


Click the Performance tab, and then click Virtual Memory.


Click "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings (recommended)" to select it.


Click OK. Click Close.


If you are prompted to restart Windows, click Yes.
