Norton & Works Suite 2000
SYMPTOMS
======== When you click a task in the Microsoft Works 2000 Task Launcher, you may receive one of the following error messages: - The Works Task Launcher cannot access the task you selected. Necessary files may be missing, corrupted, or may have been deleted. To restore or replace files, reinstall Works, and then try starting the task again. If you no longer use the task, with the right button, click the task name, and then click Delete. - Works cannot access one or more files. CAUSE ===== This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true: - A Works 2000 Task Launcher file is damaged or missing. - Norton AntiVirus is running on your computer. - Too many fonts are installed in the Fonts folder on your computer. - Multiple printer drivers are installed on your computer. RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method. A Works 2000 Task Launcher File is Damaged or Missing ----------------------------------------------------- To resolve this issue, remove Works 2000, remove the Microsoft Works 2000 folder, clean boot your computer, and then reinstall Works 2000. To do this: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Works 2000, and then click Add/Remove. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Works 2000. NOTE: If you are prompted to restart your computer, DO NOT restart it at this time. 5. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or Folders." 6. In the Named box, type "Microsoft Works 2000" (without the quotation marks). 7. In the "Look in" box, click the hard disk on which Works 2000 is installed. 8. Make sure that the "Include subfolders" check box is selected, and then click Find Now. 9. Right-click the Microsoft Works 2000 folder, and then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the folder deletion, click Yes. NOTE: If the Microsoft Works 2000 folder is not in the list of found files, proceed to the next step. 10. Close the Find: Files Named Microsoft Works 2000 window. 11. Clean boot your computer. Insert the Works 2000 installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. If Setup does not start automatically: a. Click Start, and then click Run. - In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK :\setup.exe where is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive. 13. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Works 2000. Norton AntiVirus Is Running on Your Computer -------------------------------------------- Unregister the Norton AntiVirus OfficeAV.dll plug-in. To do this: 1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or Folders." 2. In the Named box, type "OfficeAV.dll" (without the quotation marks). 3. In the "Look in" box, click the hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed, and then click Find Now. 4. In the list of found files, note the path for the OfficeAV.dll file under the In Folder column. By default, this file is located in the following folder: C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus 5. Click Start, and then click Run. 6. In the Open box, type the following line (including the quotation marks), and then click OK: regsvr32 /u "\officeav.dll" where is the path you noted in step 4. 7. Click OK when you receive the following message: DllUnregisterServer in \OfficeAV.dll succeeded. Too Many Fonts Are Installed in the Fonts Folder ------------------------------------------------ To resolve this issue, remove infrequently used fonts from the Fonts folder. NOTE: The number of fonts that you need remove varies depending on your computer configuration. In most cases, this issue does not occur if fewer than 500 fonts are installed in the Fonts folder. However, this issue has been reported with as few as 300 fonts installed in the Fonts folder. Remove any printer drivers you are not using. To do this: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers. 2.
